‘Need to sensitize people on rights of the disabled’: Chief Guest, Justice (retd.) BK Mehta

Chandigarh, December 28, 2017: The 2-day National Conference on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016- Implications for various Stakeholders concluded at GMCH, Sector 32 here today.

The conference was organised by GRIID, National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), Chennai and Umeed Society, Chandigarh. Around 200 delegates from 15 states of the country are participating in this conference.

Chief Guest, Justice (retd.) BK Mehta, while speaking on the concluding day said, “There is a need to sensitize every in the society toward disability. The persons with disability must fight for their rights. Now this is the high time for the various stakeholders to get united for the rights of persons with disabilities.”

Prof BS Chavan, Joint Director, Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), while speaking on the occasion said significance of this conference having it at this time was that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 came in to force last year in 2016 on 28th December, hence this date is very significant for all the stakeholders working in the field of disability rehabilitation.

There were two lectures by Prof. Jayanti Pujari and Dr. Himani Khanna on the topic “Challenges and issues for implementation of RPwD Act and Impact of RPwD Act 2016 on various Stakeholders respectively. The invited speaker Dr. Lalit Narayan, Dy Director Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Institute for physically handicapped, New Delhi also participated in the conference. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Wasim Ahmad organizing secretary.
