\nNational Conference president and Member of Parliament Farooq Abdullah today conveyed to Governor NN Vohra that his party was looking forward to the panchayat elections, which were long overdue.<\/p>\n
Farooq, who met the Governor at Raj Bhawan here, complained that the election of the sarpanch by the panches and not the people directly would vitiate the essence of the Panchayati Raj institution. He demanded that the full details of the delimitation of panchayats done recently by the state government should be placed in the public domain.<\/p>\n
He stressed the need for providing effective security to all candidates and maintaining the sanctity of gram sabhas till the elections were concluded.<\/p>\n
Farooq also expressed serious concern over \u201cdrug smuggling that was spreading in the state\u201d. He complained about the virtual stoppage of the registration of residents under the Aadhaar Card scheme, saying that those who were without identity cards were facing serious problems in carrying out their day-to-day businesses.<\/p>\n
Farooq informed the Governor about his recent tours to Machhil, Keran and Tithwal, and complained about the poor condition of roads, inadequate health facilities and delays in the implementation of important developmental works.<\/p>\n
