Fatehgarh Sahib : Former Punjab Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh on Thursday welcomed the Akal Takht Jathedar\u2019s decision against holding political conferences at Shaheedi Jor Mel at Fatehgarh Sahib.
\nBir Devinder had for long been spearheading campaign against holding such conferences on the solemn occasion commemorating the martyrdom of younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri, the mother of Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs.
\nHe maintained that mud-slinging at each other by leaders in their speeches at political conferences amounted to spoiling the profoundly solemn atmosphere of this purely religious occasion.
\nThe intervention by the Akal Takht Jathedar and political parties cancelling their plan to hold conferences fulfilled the long pending demand of the Sikh sangat (congregation), he said.
