US President Donald Trump Thursday said he believes the probe into Russian meddling in the US election \u201cmakes the country look very bad,\u201d according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the newspaper, Trump said he believes special counsel Robert Mueller will treat him fairly — a view in contrast with recent attacks on Mueller\u2019s credibility from Republicans, who have pressed for a new independent prosecutor to investigate anti-Trump bias.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt makes the country look very bad, and it puts the country in a very bad position,\u201d Trump told the Times. \u201cSo the sooner it\u2019s worked out, the better it is for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The president added that he was not concerned about the ongoing investigation — which his lawyers insisted would be finished by Thanksgiving — as \u201ceverybody knows\u201d there was no Russian collusion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been no collusion. But I think he\u2019s going to be fair,\u201d Trump said of Mueller.<\/p>\n
He repeated the allegations were invented by Democrats \u201cas a hoax, as a ruse, as an excuse for losing an election,\u201d the Times reported.<\/p>\n
Trump also distanced himself from ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was indicted in October in the first legal action stemming from the investigation.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe worked for me for what was it, three and a half months?\u201d he told the Times, mentioning Manafort\u2019s connections to other Republicans including John McCain and Ronald Reagan.<\/p>\n
According to the newspaper, Trump added it was \u201ctoo bad\u201d that Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from overseeing the probe — pointing out that although he did not want to \u201cget into loyalty,\u201d Barack Obama\u2019s first attorney general, Eric Holder Jr, \u201ctotally protected him.\u201d<\/p>\n
