Allahabad: SHOCKING photos have emerged of a naked holy man towing a truck with his penis to prove his devotion. The display took place at India\u2019s Magh Mela festival, held during the Hindu month of Magh, in Allahabad.<\/p>\n

The man is a \u201cSadhu\u201d who wears only beads and sandals and puts himself through a cringe-worthy test of endurance as a test of his spirituality.<\/p>\n

Sadhus are holy men who are widely respected in India and who have rejected earthly comforts to search for enlightenment.<\/p>\n

They have no earthly possessions, wear simple clothes or none at all and rely only on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter. The feats involve lifting or carrying objects or standing motionless for hours at a time.<\/p>\n

In 2014, a video emerged of a holy man lifting a weight with his penis.<\/p>\n

One Sadhu called Amar Bharati has held his arm up for 43 years in devotion to the god Shiva.<\/p>\n

As well as giving up material possessions, living in caves and performing acts of endurance, Sadhus are also helped along in their quest for spirituality by smoking cannabis before bathing in the river Ganges.

\nBut not every Sadhu completes the same ritual as Hindu worship includes a wide variety of different devotions, depending on the origin of Sadhu and the guru they trained with.<\/p>\n

Some pursue a life of solitary wandering and others live in communities.

\nBut, others are known for much more macabre practices, such as the Black Sadhu known as the Aghori.
\nThis is an intense type of Sadhu who go far beyond mere austerity and make it their life\u2019s work to overcome taboos such as meditating over corpses or even eating human flesh.<\/p>\n

The Sadhus who perform acts of endurance are known as the Fakir.
\nSome 200,000 Hindu pilgrims arrived in Allahabad for the 45-day festival.<\/p>\n

The holy men often perform feats of physical or mental endurance
\nWorshippers stay in makeshift houses or tents and bathe in the holy water of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers.<\/p>\n

The Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which is held every 12 years.<\/p>\n

Four fairs are widely recognised as the Kumbh Melas, which are the Haridwar Kumbh Mela, the Allahabad Kumbh Mela, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha, and Ujjain Simhastha<\/p>\n
