The Army Day also commemorates beginning of a new era of the taking over of reins of the Indian Army by an Indian General KM Cariappa who succeeded the last British Commander in Chief, General Francis Roy Butcher on this very day in 1948. General KM Cariappa  became the first Commander-in-Chief of Independent India.<br \/>\n            In a solemn ceremony at Veer Smriti  at Chandimandir Lieutenant General GS Dhillon, AVSM, YSM, SM, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Western Command laid the wreath on behalf of all ranks of Western Army. In his speech Lieutenant General GS Dhillon, exhorted all ranks to uphold the Saga of valour, sacrifice, duty and the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
