Russia\u2019s foreign ministry on Friday condemned the United State\u2019s new economic sanctions against Moscow, labelling them \u201cabsurd\u201d and reserving the right to a<\/p>\n
\u201cresponse\u201d.<\/p>\n
This \u201cabsurd sanctions campaign has not succeeded and will not lead to any results,\u201d the ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the American authorities prefer to break economic ties… with Russia, it is their right, as it is ours to reserve the right to a response\u201d.<\/p>\n
The fresh sanctions, which were announced by the US Treasury earlier on Friday, target Russian officials who supplied turbines to a power plant in annexed<\/p>\n
Crimea, as well as several \u201cministers\u201d from the breakaway region in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n
A total of 21 people and nine companies were hit with the sanctions, some of them over the turbines, which were built by German engineering giant Siemens for<\/p>\n
delivery to Russia but were later sent on to Crimea — which Russia seized from Ukraine and annexed in 2014.<\/p>\n
Moscow said the new sanctions were imposed \u201cunder the pretext of inventing Russia\u2019s involvement in the Ukrainian crisis\u201d, adding that the US is merely<\/p>\n
\u201cshowing the whole world its own powerlessness\u201d.<\/p>\n
