Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist, weightlifter Sanjita Chanu\u2019s wait for the Arjuna Award has just got extended.<\/p>\n
Sports Minister Vijay Goel has apparently refused to accept her recommendation for the award at the moment.<\/p>\n
The minister it\u2019s been learnt has demanded more time to revisit the entire list of recommended names for the Arjuna Awards and has delayed the signing of the file.<\/p>\n
A meeting between Goel and sports secretary Injeti Srinivas this week is expected to bring finality to the issue on whether or not Chanu would be nominated for the country\u2019s second highest sporting honour.<\/p>\n
An earlier meeting between Goel and top ministry officials on Monday had remained inconclusive.<\/p>\n
At the meeting, Goel was to put his final stamp of approval on the names of athletes recommended for this year\u2019s Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards.<\/p>\n
Goel, however, chose to deliberate further on the names.<\/p>\n
Chanu\u2019s name wasn\u2019t there in the original list of 17 sportspersons recommended for the Arjuna Awards.<\/p>\n
But, Srinivas included her name in the list, using his executive powers since a secretary can recommend the name of a meritorious athlete.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been learnt that Srinivas had held a discussion with the awards selection committee chairman, Justice (retd) C K Thakkar, in this direction and found Chanu\u2019s case deserving.<\/p>\n
Coach Satyanarayana\u2019s case rejected<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the ministry has rejected the Pullela Gopichand-led Dronacharya Award committee\u2019s recommendation to bestow the honour on para-athlete coach Satyanarayana, who trained Rio Paralympics gold medallist T Mariyappan and bronze winner Varun Bhati.<\/p>\n
Satyanarayana\u2019s name was among the three coaches recommended for the country\u2019s highest coaching honour.<\/p>\n
But, his name was stuck down after the ministry received an anonymous complaint against the coach, where it\u2019s been revealed that he is involved in legal proceedings at the Saket Court in Delhi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
