Crime drama \u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri\u201d captured five British Bafta film awards on Sunday, including best film, topping an emotionally charged<\/p>\n
ceremony that featured fashion and rhetoric in support of the fight against sexual harassment sweeping Hollywood. The movie, chronicling a grieving mother\u2019s<\/p>\n
campaign for justice, won for original screenplay and outstanding British film, while Frances McDormand bagged best actress and Sam Rockwell best<\/p>\n
supporting actor prizes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d\u2014the most heavily nominated film of the night with 12 nods\u2014came away with only three awards, including best director for Guillermo Del<\/p>\n
Toro, while \u201cDarkest Hour\u201d claimed two prizes, including for Gary Oldman as best actor.<\/p>\n
With Hollywood still reeling from the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the resulting anti-sexual harassment campaigns were reflected in the mood of the<\/p>\n
evening.<\/p>\n
Stars arrived at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall predominantly dressed in black in solidarity with the #MeToo and \u201cTime\u2019s Up\u201d campaigns, mirroring other recent<\/p>\n
American red carpets including last month\u2019s Golden Globes. Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence and Kristin Scott Thomas were among the stars who wore black.<\/p>\n
British royals avoid making overtly political statements or gestures, so there was little surprise when the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear a dark green<\/p>\n
dress, by British designer Jenny Packham, as she accompanied husband Prince William, president of Bafta, to the ceremony.<\/p>\n
\u2018BRAVE REVELATIONS\u2019 –<\/p>\n
Jane Lush, chair of Bafta, opened the evening soberly telling the star-studded audience it was important to acknowledge a \u201cdifficult\u201d past year, and noted efforts<\/p>\n
to tackle gender inequality.<\/p>\n
\u201cBrave revelations have followed brave revelations of bullying and sexual harassment, and which to all our shame has been hidden in plain sight for decades,\u201d<\/p>\n
she said. \u201cThis is a moment in history, it should be a watershed, a catalyst for lasting change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Host Joanna Lumley, a British film and TV star, also praised the gender equality movement as a continuation of the work of the Suffragettes a century ago. She<\/p>\n
hailed the \u201cdetermination to eradicate the abuse of women the world over\u201d as she took to the stage.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in an open letter published Sunday before the awards, almost 200 British and Irish stars backed a new fund to help women facing sexual<\/p>\n
harassment and abuse at work.<\/p>\n
It echoes a similar initiative launched in Hollywood last month, and was kick-started with a \u00a31 million (1.13 million euro, $1.4 million) donation from actress and<\/p>\n
activist Emma Watson.<\/p>\n

Choices at the Baftas, which fall between the Globes and the Oscars, often mirror those of the American heavyweights. \u201cThe Shape of Water\u201d, a story of love<\/p>\n
between a mute cleaning woman and a mystery merman-like creature, led the pack just as it has across the Atlantic, where it has topped the list of Oscar<\/p>\n
nominations with 13 nods, including for best picture.<\/p>\n
As well as director del Toro\u2019s award for direction, composer Alexandre Desplat collected the original music award\u2014his third BAFTA win\u2014and the film also won<\/p>\n
best production design.<\/p>\n
Allison Janney won best supporting actress for her role as the mother of controversial figure skater Tonya Harding in biopic \u201cI, Tonya\u201d.<\/p>\n
Gary Oldman\u2019s turn as Churchill in \u201cDarkest Hour\u201d has so far won him a Golden Globe, a Bafta and the chance of an Oscar on March 4. He paid tribute to the<\/p>\n
wartime British leader, saying: \u201cIn those dark, uncertain days in 1940, he held the line for honour, for integrity and freedom for his nation and the world, so I thank<\/p>\n
you, Sir Winston.\u201d<\/p>\n
Accepting her best actress accolade, McDormand, who chose not to wear black, quoted her on-screen character who has \u201ca little trouble with compliance\u201d. \u201cBut<\/p>\n
