The US said on Tuesday a global watchdog was expected to announce after two days its decision to put Pakistan on a terror watchlist, indicating a Pakistani<\/p>\n
minister might have prematurely set off celebrations that his country was off the hook.<\/p>\n
Pakistani foreign minister Khawaja M Asif said on Tuesday there was no consensus at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) meeting to place Pakistan on the<\/p>\n
\u201cgrey list\u201d for not complying with anti-money laundering and terrorism financing regulations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe final decision on that was due later this week, so I don\u2019t want to get ahead of what that final decision would be,\u201d state department spokesperson Heather<\/p>\n
Nauert told reporters when asked about Asif\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n
Nauert said she didn\u2019t have an independent confirmation that a decision was made early. \u201cWe\u2019re anticipating that the final decision would be made on Thursday<\/p>\n
of this week,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Asif had tweeted, \u201cOur efforts paid, FATF Paris 20Feb meeting conclusion on US led motion to put Pakistan on watch list \u2014 No consensus for nominating<\/p>\n

Asif, who is visiting Russia, also thanked \u201cfriends who helped\u201d.<\/p>\n
He also suggested the meeting proposed a \u201cthree months pause\u201d and asked for the Asia Pacific Group, which is part of FATF, to consider \u201canother report in<\/p>\n
June\u201d.<\/p>\n
The United States had proposed putting Pakistan on FATF\u2019s watchlist, which could hurt the country\u2019s economy as it would affect its credit ratings.<\/p>\n
Pakistan was on list from 2012 to 2015.<\/p>\n
The 37-member group, which was formed in 1987 to check money laundering, has been meeting in Paris and according to reports, the US proposal has the<\/p>\n
backing of Britain, France and Germany.<\/p>\n
Nauert said at the Paris meeting the members countries were looking at the nations that were not doing enough to crack down on terror financing,<\/p>\n
counterterrorism and the like.<\/p>\n
\u201cPakistan is one of those countries that they\u2019re taking a close look at, and they may be making \u2013 they\u2019ll be making an announcement sometime soon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The US has in the last few months stepped up pressure on Pakistan to do more to curb terror emanating from its soil. \u201cThe United States has foolishly given<\/p>\n
