\nThe United States on Monday condemned Syria\u2019s \u201cbrutal\u201d Russian-backed assault on the Eastern Ghouta rebel enclave that has reportedly left hundreds of civilians dead.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe United States condemns the ongoing military offensive that the Assad regime, backed by Russia and Iran, is perpetrating against the people of Eastern Ghouta,\u201d the White House said in a statement, referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n
Washington also accused Moscow of ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for a 30-day cessation of hostilities, saying Russia has killed \u201cinnocent civilians under the false auspices of counterterrorism operations.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the same combination of lies and indiscriminate force that Russia and the Syrian regime used to isolate and destroy Aleppo in 2016, where thousands of civilians were killed,\u201d it said, referring to Syria\u2019s one-time economic hub, which was devastated by the country\u2019s civil war.<\/p>\n
The White House also called on pro-regime forces to \u201cimmediately cease targeting medical infrastructure and civilians\u201d in Eastern Ghouta.<\/p>\n
Assad\u2019s forces have seized over a quarter of the enclave on Damascus\u2019s eastern edges after two weeks of devastating bombardment, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
