\nThe Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana and the India Meteorological Department, under GKMS project funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India, New Delhi, conducted a Farmers Awareness Programme today at village Chakar, Distt. Ludhiana. Dr Jaskaran Singh Mahal, Director of Extension Education, PAU, was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while, Dr PPS Pannu, Addl. Director Research (NR&PHM), PAU graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. Dr Jagdish Kaur, Additional Director Communication, PAU, was also present. About 150 participants including farmers and society members of Chakar village were apprised about weather based agro advisory services and different modes of dissemination of agro advisories.<\/p>\n
Dr Jaskaran Singh Mahal, Director of Extension Education, while appreciating the farmers for their village development called upon them to remain attached with the PAU experts for fortifying agriculture. He also urged the farmers to attend the forthcoming Kisan Melas and take the maximum benefit of services provided to them by the university.<\/p>\n
Dr PPS Pannu, Additional Director of Research gave detailed information about the project and urged the farmers to associate themselves with the agriculture-weather services, with the help of which many farmers have been successful in saving their crops from natural calamities. He stressed upon the judicious use of natural resources so as to conserve them for next generations. Dr Prabhjot Kaur, Head, Deptt. Of Climate Change & Agril. Meteorology, PAU, discussed about the major climate changes in the region during the past years as well as the expected changes in the future. Dr Sandeep Singh Sandhungh, Agronomist, informed the farmers about the significance of weather prediction for different crops. He cited different examples when farmers were informed about the extreme weather events in advance during crop seasons and they were benefitted by following the advisories. He also discussed about effect of temperature on wheat crop. Dr Harpal Singh Bhullar, Entomologist, urged the farmers about the judicioius use of pesticides while highlighting the importance of weather services with relation to occurrence of new pests. An interactive session addressing farmers\u2019 queries was also organized after which a brochure on different modes of dissemination of weather services in Punjabi language was distributed to them<\/p>\n
Later, Dr Jagdish Kaur, while proposing the vote of thanks, stressed on conserving natural resources and shared her views about the rich literature available in the communication centre of PAU for the farming community. She made the audience aware of the rabi & kharif package of practices and urged them to become members of PAU magazines, Change Kheti and Progressive Farming.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Dr K.K. Gill, PI of GKMS project welcomed the participants and stressed on the need to explore different media aspects through which advisories are being disseminated to farming community by different units of the state.
