US President Donald Trump hurled a new set of insults at James Comey on Sunday, challenging accusations the former FBI director makes in a tell-all book that is due for release this week, and insisting that he never pressed Comey to be loyal to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cSlippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack , will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!\u201d Trump wrote early on Sunday in one of five Twitter posts aimed directly at Comey.<\/p>\n
Later in the day, Comey wrote on Twitter that his book, \u201cA Higher Loyalty,\u201d is about \u201cethical leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c3 presidents are in my book: 2 help illustrate the values at the heart of ethical leadership; 1 serves as a counterpoint. I hope folks read the whole thing and find it useful,\u201d Comey said, without detailing which president would serve as the \u201ccounterpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n
ABC News was set to air an interview with Comey at 10 p.m. on Sunday in which he discusses his book.<\/p>\n
Trump fired Comey last May, setting off a firestorm, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probing possible connections between Trump\u2019s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia\u2019s meddling in the American elections.<\/p>\n
Russia has denied interfering in the election and Trump has denied any collusion or improper activity.<\/p>\n
Reuters and other news outlets have obtained copies of Comey\u2019s book before its formal release this week. In it, Comey wrote that Trump, in a private meeting, pressed the then-FBI director for his loyalty.<\/p>\n
The FBI has long tried to operate as an independent law enforcement agency.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty. I hardly even knew this guy. Just another of his many lies. His \u201cmemos\u201d are self serving and FAKE!\u201d Trump said on Twitter.<\/p>\n
US House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, interviewed on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d expressed qualified support for Comey. Asked whether Comey was a man of integrity, the Republican speaker said: \u201cAs far as I know,\u201d but added that he did not know him well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
