\nChina\u2019s plan to transform itself into the global technology nexus is a \u201cfrightening\u201d one that puts American intellectual property at risk, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a huge, huge problem,\u201d Ross told a gathering of fabric industry executives yesterday about the repeated theft of technology. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not going away.\u201d He said Beijing\u2019s development plan Made in China 2025 maps out the country\u2019s strategy to dominate \u201cevery hot industry\u201d from space to telecommunications to robotics to electric cars.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have been the factory floor of the world, now their vision is to be the technology center for the world,\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat they are really trying to do is take their immense trade surplus from the conventional industries of today…and plow them into semiconductor research and every kind of research you can imagine.\u201d Washington last month threatened steep tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese goods, because of policies it says aim to steal technology, and also filed a complaint at the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n
That ratcheted up tensions between the two countries and they have exchanged increasingly severe tariff threats.<\/p>\n
But US President Donald Trump yesterday confirmed that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would travel to Beijing in \u201ca few days\u201d at China\u2019s request.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
