Buddha Purnima is being celebrated in various parts of Nepal. Hundreds of people offering prayers at world famous Maya Devi temple in Lumbini, the birth place of Gautama Buddha.<\/p>\n
Lumbini is one the most important place of Buddhist pilgrimage. Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini in 563 B C. The famous Maya Devi temple is situated at the place where Gautama Buddha was born.<\/p>\n
The temple houses marker stone, nativity sculpture and ruins of 6th century BC to 15th century AD temple. Every year thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists across the world visit this UNESCO world heritage site.<\/p>\n
Near the Maya Devi temple there is Puskarini Pond, where Buddha’s mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth. Buddha also had his first bath in this holy pond. Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini in 249 BC and a pillar was erected to commemorate his visit.<\/p>\n
The pillar is made by sandstone and sedimentary rock and it is the first epigraphic evidence with reference to birth place of Sakyamuni Buddha. There are many stupas near the temple which were constructed from 1st Century BC to 5th century AD during Kushana to Gupta period.<\/p>\n
An International Buddhist Conference was also organised in Lumbini as part of 2562nd Buddha Jayanti celebrations. Participants from more than 20 countries including India attended two day conference, which was concluded last evening.<\/p>\n
The basic objective of conference was to disseminate teachings of Gautam Buddha and spread the messages of nonviolence, brotherhood, co-existence, love and peace to the international community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
