\nThe BJP headquarters was unusually silent today as news of widespread violence and arson in the saffron-ruled Haryana poured in.<\/p>\n
Haryana passing through deep turmoil again, this time due to “mismanagement” of the situation involving Sirsa Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by the Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government, is bad news for the party and also Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who in a series of tweets made his views on the situation quite clear.<\/p>\n
“The instances of violence today are deeply distressing. I strongly condemn the violence & urge everyone to maintain peace\u2026 The law & order situation is being closely monitored. I reviewed the situation with the NSA & Home Secretary\u2026 Urged officials to work round the clock to restore normalcy and provide all possible assistance that is required,” the PM said.<\/p>\n
This is for the third time under the Khattar government, which is yet to complete three years in power, people of the state had to face life-threatening situation. Despite being singed, once by the confrontation with the followers of godman Rampal in which six people were killed, and then the Jat agitation, in which 30 people lost their lives, the Haryana government has walked into its latest crisis in almost the same way as the earlier two.<\/p>\n
Earlier in Delhi, the only reaction on the day’s developments was from Anil Jain, general secretary incharge of Haryana, who largely pontified on how the Khattar government had successfully managed to deliver Ram Rahim to the Panchkula CBI court, how the BJP-led state and the Centre were keeping a “close watch” on the situation and how the media should also moderate content.<\/p>\n
Even as BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj shockingly defended Ram Rahim, calling the action against the convicted “godman” a conspiracy to malign Indian culture, sources say the party leadership and the PM are “upset” over the management of the situation by Khattar.<\/p>\n
Currently, Khattar’s only defence seems to be that a similar situation was also brewing in neighbouring Congress-ruled Punjab. And also perhaps that treating Ram Rahim and his followers with kid gloves was a political compulsion for not just the BJP but also the Congress, which too reaped political benefits due to Ram Rahim’s massive following.<\/p>\n
Facing flak for “ignoring” the buildup and visible warnings, senior BJP leaders say while “today is not the correct time”, it seemed no longer tenable for the party to keep carrying on with him for long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
