\nIranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that if the United States quits the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers then Washington would regret it \u201clike never before\u201d.<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump has threatened to abandon the agreement when it comes up for renewal on May 12, demanding his country’s European allies \u201cfix the terrible flaws\u201d or he will re-impose sanctions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the United States leaves the nuclear agreement, you will soon see that they will regret it like never before in history,\u201d Rouhani said in a televised speech in northwestern Iran.<\/p>\n
“We have plans to resist any decision by Trump on the nuclear accord,” Rouhani told a rally in northeast Iran. “Orders have been issued to our atomic energy organisation … and to the economic sector to confront America’s plots against our country.”<\/p>\n
“We will not negotiate with anyone about our weapons and defenses, and we will make and store as many weapons, facilities and missiles as we need,” Rouhani said, reiterating a rejection by Iranian leaders of talks on Iran’s missile programme that Tehran says is defensive.
\n\u201cTrump must know that our people are united, the Zionist regime (Israel) must know that our people are united,\u201d Rouhani added.<\/p>\n
The nuclear deal was struck in 2015 between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, then led by Barack Obama.<\/p>\n
Under the pact, sanctions were lifted in return for a commitment not to pursue a nuclear bomb, but Iran says it is not reaping the rewards despite complying with the deal.<\/p>\n
The Islamic republic has always denied it sought a nuclear weapon, insisting its atomic programme was for civilian purposes.<\/p>\n
Rouhani did not specify how Iran would react if the US pulls out of the deal.<\/p>\n
But he said he had given \u201cthe necessary orders\u201d, notably to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, in anticipation of Trump’s decision.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
