\nAiming to improve air travel experience in the country, the Centre has proposed abolishing cancellation charges for domestic flight tickets if the cancellation is made within 24 hours of booking.<\/p>\n
The clause of no-cancellation charges, however, would only apply for a flight scheduled to depart within 96 hours of the tickets being booked, said Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha while unveiling the draft air passenger charter.<\/p>\n
The charter, which has already had some airlines protesting as refunds could hit their profits, has been placed in the public domain for comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a flight is cancelled and it is the airlines\u2019 fault, then a passenger has to be compensated or ticket cost has to be refunded,\u201d Sinha said. The minister said the cancellation charges should not be higher than the base fare plus fuel charge.<\/p>\n
According to the charter, passengers will be compensated if an airline is at fault for any delay. If a domestic airline cancels a flight or delays it for more than four hours, the passenger will be eligible for a full refund.<\/p>\n
In case of overnight delay, the airline would also have to offer free hotel stay. It will also have to compensate passengers for missed connecting flights, says the charter.<\/p>\n
It suggests that if a connecting flight is missed because the first flight is delayed for more than three hours, the airline has to pay Rs 5,000. If the delay is of four to 12 hours, the passenger can get Rs 10,000. For even more delay, the airline is liable to pay Rs 20,000, the draft mentions.<\/p>\n
If the plane is on the tarmac for more than an hour, passengers must be provided enough food and drinks free of cost and if the time stretches to more than two hours, the passengers must be allowed to exit the plane.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
