Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, said her new husband Prince Harry told him to give US President Donald Trump a chance and that he had an open mind about Britain\u2019s exit from the European Union.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was complaining I didn\u2019t like Donald Trump. He said \u201cgive Donald Trump a chance\u201d. I sort of disagreed with that, but I still like Harry,\u201d Markle told ITV\u2019s Good Morning Britain in his first broadcast interview since the royal wedding.<\/p>\n
Thomas Markle, 73, said he had spoken to Prince Harry by phone in the months leading up to the wedding. Harry, Markle said, told him that he was \u201copen to the experiment\u201d of Brexit.<\/p>\n
Kensington Palace, which speaks for Harry and his brother William, declined to comment on the interview, though the statements by Meghan\u2019s father may bring unease to the royal family, who try to remain politically neutral.<\/p>\n
In the days leading up to the May 19 wedding of his daughter and Prince Harry, Markle gave a flurry of sometimes contradictory statements to an American news website about whether he would attend.<\/p>\n
Markle spoke of his regret that he wasn\u2019t well enough to walk his daughter down the aisle as she married Prince Harry, but said he was pleased that Harry\u2019s father, Prince Charles, was able to step in.<\/p>\n
Markle had been due to take part in the ceremony, but he eventually stayed away, saying he needed heart surgery.<\/p>\n
In the end, Meghan walked down the first part of the aisle unescorted, before she was joined by Charles, heir to the throne.<\/p>\n
A former lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms, Thomas Markle, said that he was sad to have missed the ceremony, but also proud of his daughter and grateful to Queen Elizabeth\u2019s oldest son Charles for stepping in.<\/p>\n
\u201cWatching it was difficult for me, because I wasn\u2019t there, but at the same time I couldn\u2019t have been more proud,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can I ask for a better replacement than Charles? I was thrilled to tears that he was doing that for me. I just wish it had been my hand holding my daughter, not his. But he was wonderful to them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Markle also apologised for staging photos with a photographer which contributed to the furore around him ahead of the wedding.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought that would be a nice way of improving my look. Well obviously that all went to hell,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meghan\u2019s parents are divorced and while mother Doria Ragland, 61, has met Harry and attended the wedding, Thomas Markle is yet to meet the prince.<\/p>\n
