Discussions on wheat, barley, pulses, maize, oilseeds, forages, millets, forestry; agricultural engineering; straw management and economics were held during the two-day Research and Extension Specialists\u2019 Workshop for Rabi Crops, which concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today.<\/p>\n
Chairing the concluding session, Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Extension Education, PAU, urged the extension functionaries to encourage farmers to discuss their field problems and other agriculture related issues with the PAU experts via social media or other extension modes with which they (farmers) are familiar. He also exhorted the scientists to contribute articles to the monthly magazines of the University, Changi Kheti and Progressive Farming, for updating and enhancing the knowledge of the farmers.<\/p>\n
Dr T.S. Riar, Professor of Extension Education, coordinated the session.<\/p>\n
In the technical sessions, the experts deliberated on the package of practices for wheat, barley, pulses, winter\/spring maize, oilseeds and forages. Besides, they dwelt on the status of cotton and rice crops with respect to insect-pests, diseases and their management; machinery for incorporation of paddy straw; bailing of paddy straw; status of different technologies for straw management; straw management in rice-wheat rotation and microbial interventions in paddy straw management. In addition, they discussed farm machinery such as, Super SMS and Happy Seeder, PAU Straw Cutter-cum-Spreader and Happy Seeder with Press Wheels, Paddy Straw Bale Geyser and Portable Maize Dryer. Apart from this, experts delved on the economics of rabi crops, insect-pest management in forest trees, selection of inter-crops under poplar based agro-forestry system and raising of agro-forestry tree species.<\/p>\n
Earlier, participants visited experimental areas of Entomology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, and Agronomy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
