Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte courted controversy after he called God \u201cstupid\u201d for the concept of \u201coriginal sin\u201d in the Bible\u2019s creation story, news portal Rappler reported.<\/p>\n
Addressing a summit in Davao City on Friday, Duterete, an open critic of the Catholic Church, said that he had issues with the Bible and questioned God\u2019s logic, calling him \u201cstupid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAdam ate it then malice was born. Who is this stupid God? Istupido talaga itong putangina kung ganoon ,\u201d he said, reported Rappler. \u201cYou created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Talking about his interpretation of the concept of \u201coriginal sin,\u201d the president said, \u201cThat was your mother and father\u2019s deed \u2013 you weren\u2019t born yet, but now you have original sin. What kind of religion is that? I can\u2019t accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asserting that he is a spiritual man who does not believe in any religion, Duterte added, \u201cI believe there is a universal mind, but\u2026 I cannot picture him as a human being. But I really believe, I have this faith and abiding thing, but don\u2019t believe in religion.\u201d He made similar remarks earlier this month during a meeting with the Filipino community in South Korea. \u201cIf that\u2019s the Catholic God, that\u2019s a lie. Seek God right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
This was, however, not the first time that Duterte has been critical of the Catholic faith, despite the Philippines being a Catholic-majority country. Earlier, he slammed the priests for portraying his government in a negative light. In 2016, the Philippines president had created a row after he called Pope Francis a \u201cson of a bitch\u201d after his visit to Manila resulted in severe traffic jams.
