\nMaharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis agreed to a demand by opposition parties to call a special session of the state legislature to discuss the issue over granting reservations to the Maratha community.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters here after an all-party meeting at Vidhan Bhawan here this afternoon, Fadnavis said the government was taking every step to ensure that the Maratha community gets reservations in educational institutions and government jobs. “I am making appeal to every party not to get carried away and provoke violence,” Fadnavis said.<\/p>\n
The chief minister said the government would like the hearing conducted by the Bombay High Court on the reservation issue to be speeded up.<\/p>\n
The state Backward Caste Commission which studying the issue of reservations for the Maratha community would be asked to submit its report at the earliest. “We will provide all help to the commission so that it can submit its report at the earliest,” Fadnavis said.<\/p>\n
Earlier the opposition parties had accused the government of delaying providing information to the commission, which was prolonging the court’s proceedings.<\/p>\n
The chief minister went on to say that cases registered against those participating in the Maharashtra bandh would be withdrawn. However serious cases like assault on police personnel and carrying out arson of public property would not be withdrawn, Fadnavis added.<\/p>\n
He added that all political parties were unanimous that colleges should give concession in fees to students from the Maratha community.<\/p>\n
Fadnavis added that political parties had taken note of colleges refusing to give concessions in fees to these students. “We’re ready to help the colleges if they have any practical problems, but if they deliberately try to deny concessions to Maratha students, the education department will cancel their registrations,” Fadnavis added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
