Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Monday sought presidential security to appear before a court in Islamabad in a high treason case citing threats to his life.<\/p>\n
During Monday\u2019s hearing, Musharraf\u2019s attorney, Akhtar Shah, told the Justice Yawar Ali-led two-member bench of the special court that his client would return and \u201cappear before the court if he is given presidential level security by the Defence Ministry\u201d, reports Dawn news.<\/p>\n
\u201cMusharraf\u2019s life is in danger… There were two attempts on his life: once in the Islamabad court and the other in Quetta during the Akbar Bugti case hearing,\u201d Shah added<\/p>\n
In response, a bench member said: \u201cThere is a non-bailable warrant out against Musharraf, so to provide him security is the government\u2019s responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
The case against the former leader is for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007 – an offence for which he was indicted by the special court on March 31, 2014.<\/p>\n
That same year, the state prosecution laid down all its evidence but the progress in the case still slowed down due to Musharraf who filed multiple petitions against his trial at the appellate forum.<\/p>\n
In March 2016, he left the country for Dubai to \u201cseek medical treatment\u201d and has not returned since, Dawn reported.<\/p>\n
Regarding the federal government\u2019s request to wrap up the case quickly, Justice Yawar observed: \u201cIt is necessary to record Musharraf\u2019s statement.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
