\nTurbulence in China\u2019s restive far western region of Xinjiang has been caused by \u201cexternal factors\u201d, a state-run newspaper said Saturday in an editorial responding to calls by a group of US lawmakers for sanctions on Chinese officials.<\/p>\n
\u201cWestern accusations of Xinjiang governance seriously misled the extremists, making them believe they were launching religious Jihad and won sympathy and support from Western and international society,\u201d said the editorial in the Global Times, a tabloid published by the ruling Communist Party\u2019s People\u2019s Daily.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome forces have slandered China\u2019s governing efforts\u201d in Xinjiang, the editorial said, accusing a \u201cWest-centered (value) system\u201d of making \u201cempty statements about human rights regardless of the purpose and effect of Xinjiang governance and the grim reality it targets.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSuch empty talk inspires extremists, which meets the purposes of some Western politicians trying to undermine the governance achievements in Xinjiang and push the region into turmoil,\u201d the editorial said.<\/p>\n
Whether Xinjiang governance abuses human rights must be judged by whether its results safeguard the interests of the majority in the region, it continued.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, a bipartisan group of US lawmakers called for sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for human rights abuses against minority Muslims in China\u2019s Xinjiang region, saying it was being turned into a \u201chigh-tech police state.\u201d On Thursday, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing in Beijing that the United States did \u201cnot have the right\u201d to make \u201cunwarranted criticism\u201d of China\u2019s policies toward ethnic minorities.<\/p>\n
