\nThe faculty and students of Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated \u201cNational Nutrition Week\u201d from September 1-7 under the theme \u201cOptimal Infant and Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health.\u201d The department organized several activities to intensify nutritional awareness among community. Lectures-cum-demonstrations were given in local schools including Government Senior Secondary School, PAU, Gobind Nagar and GGN Public School to generate awareness on the importance of nutrition for health. In addition, an inter-class quiz competition was conducted in the College of Home Science, PAU. An inter-college cooking competition on \u201cPreparation of Nutritious Snacks for Infants and Pre-School Children\u201d was also organized in which students from local colleges participated. The participants displayed their nutritious and delicious snacks.<\/p>\n
Dr Jatinder Gulati, Dean, College of Home Science, gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions. She appreciated the efforts put in by the department for improving the nutritional status of population, which is imperative for national development. She said nutrition is an issue of survival, health and development for current and succeeding generations.<\/p>\n
Dr Kiran Grover, Coordinator of the activities, said, \u201cEvery year 45 per cent of all child deaths are attributable to malnutrition, which is preventable.\u201d The first 1000 days, from time of conception to first two years of child life are critical period of vulnerability in child health, she observed. The optimal infant and young child feeding practices during this period are most impactful life saving nutrition specific interventions, she added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
