The New Yorker magazine rescinded its invitation to former White House adviser Steve Bannon after several prominent guests threatened to pull out of its annual event. Magazine editor David Remnick in a statement to his colleagues said he had changed his mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve thought this through and talked to colleagues, and I\u2019ve re-considered,\u201d Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced Trump and his administration, wrote of his decision on Bannon. \u201cThere is a better way to do this. Our writers have interviewed Steve Bannon for The New Yorker before, and if the opportunity presents itself I\u2019ll interview him in a more traditionally journalistic setting as we first discussed, and not on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Remnick was scheduled to hold a free-ranging discussion with Bannon, also a former chairman of conservative news site Breitbart News, on the political movements redefining international and local politics.<\/p>\n
The invitation was denounced by Roxane Gay, Jessica Valenti and many others. Gay tweeted that \u201cthe intellectual class doesn\u2019t truly understand racism or xenophobia. They treat it like an intellectual project, where perhaps if we ask \u2018hard question\u2019 and bandy about `controversial\u2019 ideas, good work is being done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Filmmaker Judd Apatow had tweeted he would not attend if Bannon was interviewed. Kathryn Schulz was among the New Yorker staff writers who tweeted that they had informed Remnick directly about their objections.<\/p>\n
Tweeted Patton Oswalt: \u201cI\u2019m out. Sorry, (at)NewYorker. See if Milo Yiannopoulos is free?\u201d a reference to the far-right writer and speaker whose memoir was dropped last year by Simon & Schuster after numerous complaints.<\/p>\n
Initially, Remnick defended his decision saying, \u201cThe point of an interview, a rigorous interview, particularly in a case like this, is to put pressure on the views of the person being questioned.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no illusion here. It\u2019s obvious that no matter how tough the questioning, Bannon is not going to burst into tears and change his view of the world. He believes he is right and that his ideological opponents are mere \u2018snowflakes.\u2019 The question is whether an interview has value in terms of fact, argument, or even exposure, whether it has value to a reader or an audience.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
