Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s Brexit deal wraps \u201ca suicide vest around the British constitution\u201d and hands the detonator to the European Union, former foreign minister Boris Johnson said in comments that drew strong criticism.<\/p>\n
In an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, Johnson pressed his attack on May\u2019s so-called Chequers plan to leave the EU, calling it \u201ca humiliation\u201d that opens \u201courselves to perpetual political blackmail\u201d.<\/p>\n
May is under fire from all sides of the divisive Brexit debate, with Johnson, favourite to succeed her, leading a push by eurosceptic lawmakers for the government to \u201cchuck Chequers\u201d and pursue a clean break with the bloc.<\/p>\n
But so far, May has signalled she will not drop her blueprint for Britain\u2019s future ties with the bloc after Brexit – the biggest shift in the country\u2019s foreign and trade policy for almost half a century.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have wrapped a suicide vest around the British constitution \u2013 and handed the detonator to (EU chief negotiator) Michel Barnier,\u201d Johnson wrote.<\/p>\n
His words – particularly the reference to a suicide vest – drew condemnation from fellow members of the governing Conservative Party.<\/p>\n
Alan Duncan, a minister at the Foreign Office, said Johnson\u2019s comments marked \u201cone of the most disgusting moments in modern British politics\u201d.<\/p>\n
