\nAmid boycott call and militant threats, Kashmir Valley witnessed a low poll percentage in 57 wards across five districts in the phase 1 of municipal polls that were held amid tight security on Monday.<\/p>\n
According to poll officials, overall voter turnout in Jammu district till 4 pm was 63.8 per cent.
\nDistrict-wise poll percentage tilll 4 pm: Anantnag 7.3, Budgam 17, Bandipore 3.4, Baramulla 5.1, Kupwara 32.3, Srinagar 6.2, Kargil 78.2, Leh 55.2, Jammu 63.8, Poonch 73.1 and Rajouri 81 per cent.<\/p>\n
Stating that these are approximate figures, officials added that the exact poll percentage will be given later after polling parties report back. They added that voters who were in queue at 4pm are entitled to vote even after 4 pm.
\nThe polling was largely peaceful. There were stray incidents of violence in Srinagar and Bandipore areas. However, without causing any damage.<\/p>\n
Polling was held for 57 municipal wards spread over five districts in the Kashmir Valley, including three wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), one of Budgam, 16 of Bandipora, 15 of Baramulla, seven of Handwara in Kupwra district and 11 wards of Kupwara. Unprecedented response from voters was witnessed in remote Kargil district.<\/p>\n
Tight security arrangements were in place following the boycott call by separatist organisations led by Joint Resistance Leadership of Hurriyat leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik.<\/p>\n
