Hisar

August 4, 2003. Dr Baljeet Bhyan will not forget this date ever in his life. The Hisar-based horticultural scientist had begun the day cheerfully as it was his daughter Ekta Bhyan’s first day to a coaching institute where she would pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. But on the way she and six of her batchmates met with a freak incident when an overloaded truck overturned on their cab near Kundli on Delhi-Haryana border. Five girls were crushed to death but Ekta and one more girl were lucky to survive.

Ekta suffered quadriplegic spinal cord injury and was wheelchair-bound for entire life. The dream of becoming a doctor, however, was crushed.

Despite the tragedy, she continued her studies but the dream faded away. In 2014, Ekta met para-athlete-cum-coach Amit Saroha of Sonepat and a new dream started taking shape of becoming an international sportsperson.

On Tuesday, Ekta turned that dream into reality by becoming the first woman from Haryana to win a gold in Para Asian Games in Jakarta. Ekta produced her best throw in the fourth attempt, 16.02m, winning the F32/51 event in club throw, ahead of UAE’s Alkaabi Thekra .

Ekta had qualified for the Para Asian Games after winning one gold and one bronze in the World Para Athlete Grand Prix Championship in Tunisia earlier this year. She is ranked No. 1 in the discus throw and club throw events in Asia.

Ekta, a Haryana Civil Services officer who is posted as an assistant employment officer in Hisar, has become a source of great joy and pride to her colleagues who have not stopped gushing about her achievements ever since they got the news of her success.
