Former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump\u2019s tenure in office Friday in a fiery speech in Milwaukee that took aim at him and other Republicans for \u201cmaking stuff up\u201d.<\/p>\n
The speech was one of Obama\u2019s sharpest and most direct takedowns of Trump\u2019s presidency, although the former president was careful to never mention Trump by name.<\/p>\n
Obama cited a recent Trump comment that he would pass a tax cut before the November election. Obama then told the crowd in a Milwaukee high school gymnasium that \u201cCongress isn\u2019t even in session! He just makes it up!\u201d<\/p>\n
At one point Obama said: \u201cHere\u2019s the thing. Everything I say you can look up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Obama\u2019s visit in Milwaukee was to urge people to vote for Wisconsin\u2019s Democratic candidates. While Trump was frequently the target of his criticism, he didn\u2019t spare Republicans generally and said they are lying when they say they want to protect people with pre-existing conditions while trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we have not seen before \u2026. is politicians just blatantly, repeatedly, baldly, shamelessly, lying. Making stuff up,\u201d Obama said. \u201cCalling up, down. Calling black, white. That\u2019s what your governor is doing with these ads, just making stuff up,\u201d he said, referring to Gov. Scott Walker and his assertions that he wants to protect health care for those with pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n
Obama then used the subject of Hillary Clinton\u2019s private email server to accuse Republicans of trying to \u201cscare the heck out of people before every election\u201d and also to mock Trump about the Chinese spying on his cellphone.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the last election, it was Hillary\u2019s emails. \u2018This is terrible\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is a national security crisis.\u2019 They didn\u2019t care about emails and you know how you know? Because if they did, they\u2019d be up in arms right now that the Chinese are listening to the president\u2019s iPhone that he leaves in his golf cart.\u201d<\/p>\n
Obama spoke about the slow-moving migrant caravan from Central American bound for the United States as another example of a Republican scare tactic.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow the latest, they\u2019re trying to convince everybody to be afraid of a bunch of impoverished, malnourished refugees a thousand miles away,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the thing that is the most important thing in this election,\u201d he said. \u201cNot health care, not whether or not folks are able to retire, doing something about higher wages, rebuilding our roads and bridges and putting people back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSuddenly,\u201d he continued, changing his voice to a high-pitch to strike a mocking tone, \u201cit\u2019s these group of folks. We don\u2019t even know where they are. They\u2019re right down there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Referring to Trump\u2019s promise to \u201cdrain the swamp,\u201d Obama said that instead \u201cthey have gone to Washington and just plundered away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Washington, they have racked up enough indictments to field a football team,\u201d he said. \u201cNobody in my administration got indicted.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
