Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Parliament to approve four new ministers and help his government \u201cresist\u201d and \u201cfight\u201d the US as it reinstates sanctions against the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n
Rouhani\u2019s comments came as lawmakers were discussing the vote for candidates vying for the ministries of Labor, Finance, Industry and Transportation.<\/p>\n
The US has steadily restored sanctions on Iran following President Donald Trump\u2019s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord in May. Next month, the US plans to impose sanctions on Iran\u2019s oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n
Iran is already in the grip of an economic crisis and has seen sporadic protests in recent months though Iranian officials have generally tried to downplay the sanctions and their effects.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have problems that we must solve with each other\u2019s help,\u201d Rouhani told lawmakers.<\/p>\n
Rouhani added that the US was undoubtedly Iran\u2019s largest enemy, saying: \u201cIf it weren\u2019t, why would they impose sanctions on medicine and food?\u201d Iran and the US are in an economic war, stressed Rouhani, who added: \u201cWe have to bring the US to its knees.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump vowed to do whatever it takes to pressure Iran to halt what he described as its \u201cmalign conduct,\u201d referring to its alleged nuclear and missile development and support for terrorism and groups that destabilize the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Trump suggested he would be willing to hold talks with Iranian leaders, but that would be impossible without permission from Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all major policies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
