Despite courting controversies and backlash from members of the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, Sarkar continues to hold steady at the box office. The Vijay starrer is one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year as it was released on 3000 screens across the globe.

Protests had erupted across Tamil Nadu over certain scenes which showed state-provided freebies being thrown in the fire. Members of the ruling party also took objection to the female villain’s being called “Komalavalli”. The actual name of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa was Komalavalli.

In the wake of the growing criticism, the team of Sarkar on Friday decided to make some changes to the film. In an application to the Central Board of Film Certification , the team requested to omit some scenes and dialogues from the movie. Sarkar’s re-edited version was showcased across screens from Friday evening.

Despite protests, the makers of Sarkar are laughing all the way to the bank. The movie is fast nearing the Rs 100 crore mark. The film had opened on November 6 to mixed reviews.

The Indian Express film critic S Subhakeerthana said in her review, “Sarkar belongs to Vijay, but not AR Murugadoss. It’s tailor-made for ‘Thalapathy’ who speaks of farmer suicides, Jallikattu, Tuticorin protests, the fishermen’s issue, ‘marketing and branding’ and how with the support of youngsters, he can save Tamil Nadu. Watch out for the scene where he talks about tomatoes and ketchup, please.”

Along with Vijay, Sarkar also stars Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Radha Ravi and Yogi Babu in significant roles. The music by AR Rahman is already a hit among the audience.
