\nTaking strong exception to VIP treatment given to certain inmates in Tihar Jail, the Supreme Court on Thursday wondered if there was a parallel system running in Indian prisons and asked the government to inform it by Monday about the action taken.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese persons are enjoying TV. God knows what all they are enjoying. They are sitting on sofas\u2026 Is there a parallel system running in jails?\u201d wondered a Bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur, citing media reports that TV, sofa and other prohibited items were found in a Tihar Jail cell where Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra and his brother Ajay were lodged for allegedly cheating hundreds of home buyers.<\/p>\n
The Bench, which was hearing a matter related to pathetic condition of jails highlighted by two Supreme Court judges during their visit to Faridabad jail and an observation home in June, also talked about media reports highlighting use of mobile phones in jails in several states, including Bihar.<\/p>\n
An Additional Sessions Judge had carried out inspection in the jail on September 4 following complaints from inmates that the Chandra brothers and others were enjoying \u201cluxurious lifestyle\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cReport of a judge says that Unitech officials are enjoying facilities in Tihar. Is there a parallel system running in jails? Do they have special rights in jails?
