{"id":53525,"date":"2019-01-27T08:57:29","date_gmt":"2019-01-27T08:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blastingskyhawk.com\/?p=53525"},"modified":"2019-01-27T08:57:29","modified_gmt":"2019-01-27T08:57:29","slug":"pope-francis-says-church-hasnt-known-how-to-listen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blastingskyhawk.com\/english\/pope-francis-says-church-hasnt-known-how-to-listen\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis says Church hasn\u2019t known \u2018how to listen\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis acknowledged Saturday that the Catholic Church was \u201cwounded by sin\u201d in a message addressed to priests and seminarians reeling from sexual abuse scandals and coverups.<\/p>\n<p>In a mass that he officiated at the centuries-old Cathedral of Santa Maria La Antigua in Panama City, Francis warned of the \u201cweariness of hope that comes from seeing a Church wounded by sin, which has so often failed to hear all those cries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, at a massive vigil that the organisers said drew 6,00,000 pilgrims to a park outside Panama City, the pope called on young people to reject the temptation to live their lives online and get involved in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Life was not \u201cin the cloud, waiting to be downloaded, a new app to be discovered, or a technique of mental self-improvement,\u201d the 82-year-old pontiff said during a grandfatherly discourse.<\/p>\n<p>He urged them \u201cto embrace life as it presented itself,\u201d and look for areas where \u201cwith your hands, your heart and your head, you can feel part of a larger community that needs you and that you yourselves need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at length about young people\u2019s difficulties in finding meaning in their lives, Francis said many young people often feel \u201cinvisible\u201d\u201crootless and parched without work, without education, without community, without family.\u201d Going off script momentarily, he added: \u201cThese four \u2018withouts\u2019 kill\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In his earlier homily to the seminarians, Francis\u2019 reference to the sex abuse scandals rocking the Church was his first since his arrival in Panama on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>It came up again during a lunch he hosted with the Archbishop of Panama, Cardinal Jose Domingo Ulloa, for 10 young people of different nationalities attending World Youth Day, held every three years.<\/p>\n<p>There, sitting over lunch at a white linen covered table, the pope referred to clerical sex abuse as \u201ca horrible crime.\u201d He was responding to a question from a young Mexican immigrant to the US, Brenda Berenice Noriega, about the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>She said it meant a lot to her to hear the pope say at the lunch that \u201call the victims of the sexual crisis\u201d had to be heard, \u201cand that the Church is committed to supporting them.\u201d Francis has called senior bishops from around the world to Rome next month to deal with widespread clergy sex abuse of children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing white robed young seminarians and priests during the mass, the pope said \u201ca subtle weariness\u201d had entered Church communities that \u201ccalls into question the energy resources and viability of our mission in this changing and challenging world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those changes, he said, \u201ccall into doubt the very viability of religious life in today\u2019s world.\u201d But the notion that religious communities had nothing to contribute that the world \u201chas no room for our message\u201d would be \u201cone of the worst heresies possible in our time.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis acknowledged Saturday that the Catholic Church was \u201cwounded by sin\u201d in a message addressed to priests and seminarians reeling from sexual abuse scandals and coverups.
