The Chinese and Russian foreign ministers called for a peaceful end to the \u201cvicious cycle\u201d on the Korean peninsula as they met in New York for the UN General Assembly, Beijing said on Tuesday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov urged all parties to seek a \u201cpeaceful resolution\u201d to the current stand-off with Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons program, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Korean Peninsula nuclear problem must be solved through peaceful means,\u201d it quoted Wang as saying, adding that \u201cthe current deepening vicious cycle must be broken\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cRestoring peace talks is also a necessary step to carrying out the UN Security Council\u2019s resolution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Lavrov said Russia\u2019s position on the issue is \u201ccompletely identical\u201d to China\u2019s, the statement said.<\/p>\n
Russia has joined China\u2019s call for a \u201cdual-track\u201d approach in which North Korea suspends its weapons programme in return for the United States halting military drills in the region.<\/p>\n
The White House said earlier that US President Donald Trump had spoken with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping over the phone, saying the two leaders were \u201ccommitted to maximizing pressure on North Korea through vigorous enforcement of United Nations Security Council resolutions\u201d.<\/p>\n
Trump is currently in New York for the UN General Assembly but Xi \u2014 who has a major Communist Party congress next month that will cement his leadership for the next five years \u2014 is not attending the event.<\/p>\n
The UN Security Council last week imposed a fresh set of sanctions, though Washington toned down its original proposals to secure support from China and Russia.<\/p>\n
