A lawyer has denied allegations by Jeff Bezos that the National Enquirer tabloid had tried to extort and blackmail him, insisting that embarrassing photographs were obtained from a \u201creliable\u201d source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt absolutely is not extortion and not blackmail,\u201d Elkan Abramowitz, who represents National Enquirer parent company American Media Inc (AMI)\u2019s chief executive David Pecker, told ABC television\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat happened was the story was given to the National Enquirer by a reliable source that had been given information to the National Enquirer for seven years prior to the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can tell you it\u2019s not Saudi Arabia, it\u2019s not President Trump, it\u2019s not Roger Stone. But I cannot tell you who the source is.\u201d The attorney was responding to Bezos\u2019s stunning claims published on online platform Medium on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked if the Enquirer\u2019s source was Sanchez\u2019s brother Michael, as reported by some media outlets, Abramowitz declined to confirm.\u201cIt was a person that was known to both Bezos and Ms Sanchez,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bezos hinted he may have been targeted by pro-Trump forces in part because of coverage by The Washington Post, which he owns, of the murder of its contributor Jamal Khashoggi, strangled and dismembered by Saudi agents in the kingdom\u2019s Istanbul consulate in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Abramowitz insisted that the Enquirer\u2019s exchanges with Bezos, which the billionaire released in his online post, were simply journalistic negotiating practices rather than extortion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
