Punjab News 24:\u00a0<\/strong>Epilepsy\u00a0<\/em>is a broad term for a brain disorder that causes seizures. About 470,000 children aged 17 years or younger have epilepsy in the United States.\u00a0Picture a school with 1,000 students\u2014that means at least 6 students would have epilepsy.<\/p>\n

A study showed that students with epilepsy aged 6\u201317 years old were more likely to miss 11 or more days of school in the past year compared with students who had health concerns other than epilepsy. Students with epilepsy were found to be more likely to have difficulties in school, use special education services, and have activity limitations such as less participation in sports or clubs.\u00a0Researchers also found that a child or adolescent with epilepsy had an additional 4.5 lacs\u00a0per year in medical costs than children without the disorder.<\/p>\n

Experts don\u2019t know what causes epilepsy in all cases. We do know that it\u2019s very important to get appropriate medical care to control seizures.<\/p>\n

Uncontrolled seizures can:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Cause other health problems to develop.<\/li>\n
  • Lead to injuries.<\/li>\n
  • Increase the risk of death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Talk with your child\u2019s heath care provider to make sure your child\u2019s seizures are controlled as much as possible.<\/li>\n
    • Explore different treatment options for your child with epilepsy.<\/li>\n
    • Encourage your child\u2019s school nurse, school staff, or day care providers to become more familiar with epilepsy and first aid for seizures through the\u00a0Epilepsy Foundation\u2019s\u00a0programs:\n
