He said the scheme will be \nbroadened and spread further while programmes will be implemented across\n the island to educate the masses.<br><br>Keeping in view the elections \nlater this year, the budget announced few welfare programme including \nconcessionary home loan for newly married, enhanced allowances for \ngovernment servants and free education in foreign universities for high \nschool topper students.<br><br>The excise duty on liquor and import duty\n on vehicles were proposed to be increased to achieve revenue targets. \nThe budget was to be presented last November but was delayed due to \npolitical crisis in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister announced a sequence\n of steps to increase the number of women in the country\u2019s work force \nand said labour laws will be amended to achieve this. <br><br>The budget\n projected plans to increase public revenue to 17 percent of Gross \nDomestic Product (GDP) with a deficit to 4.4 percent.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lankan Minister of Finance Managala Samaraweera presented the budget proposal for 2019 on Tuesday under the theme \u201cEnterprise Sri Lanka &#8211; Empowering the People, Nurturing the Poor\u201d.
