Pakistan intensified its crackdown against Islamist militants on Thursday, with the government announcing it had taken control of 182 madrasas and detained more than 100 people as part of its push against banned groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The interior ministry said it was part of a long-planned drive, not a response to Indian anger over what New Delhi calls Islamabad\u2019s failure to rein in militant groups operating on Pakistani soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pakistan is facing pressure from global powers to act against groups carrying out attacks in India, including Jaish-e-Mohammed, which claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack that killed at least 40 CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Pulwama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Provincial governments have \u201ctaken in their control management and administration of 182 seminaries \u201d, Pakistan\u2019s interior ministry said in a statement, referring to religious schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLaw enforcement agencies have taken 121 people under preventive detention as of today,\u201d the ministry added.In Pakistan, madrasas are often blamed for radicalisation of youngsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many banned groups such as JeM run seminaries. Another banned outfit, Jamaat-ud-Dawa , which calls itself an Islamic charity and operates large welfare operations, is estimated to run about 300 madrasas across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
