The mortal remains of late Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar were consigned to flames at Miramar near Panaji Monday evening. The former Defence Minister was accorded a state funeral with full military honours. Several dignitaries, including BJP president Amit Shah were present. Manohar Parrikar, who was 63, breathed his last on Sunday at his residence near Panaji after battling a pancreatic ailment for over a year. He is survived by two sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People overwhelmed with emotion, bidding farewell to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, a sign of love and gratitude for his service to the people. As his mortal remains moved from the Kala Academy where streams of people had paid him homage, a sea of humanity followed his mortal remains to Miramar beach where they were consigned to flames amid full state honours. He was a leader of the common man. BJP President Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of several BJP-ruled states were present at Miramar beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Parrikar’s mortal remains were brought to the Goa BJP office, where party workers could spend a few moments of silence and bid him a final farewell. His body was wrapped in the tricolor\u2026 and hundreds of his party co workers were moved to tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Army truck carrying his body drove a distance of five kilometers from his home in Donna Paula, and on the way people stood in solidarity and respect for their leader. The body was kept for the public to pay their respects at the Kala Academy till 4 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Processions of people thronged the Kala Academy to pay their last respects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself came to teh Kala Academy and bid farewell to his friend, well wisher and former cabinet colleague. The Prime Minister interacted with the late chief minster’s sons and his brother. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Union Ministers too paid their last respects to Parrikar. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, Chief Ministers of many states, several MPs, MLAs, and leaders cutting across political affiliations paid rich tributes to Manohar Parrikar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The State of Goa has declared Seven days of mourning. Markets in Mapusa and Panaji, were closed as a mark of respect. The Union Cabinet maintained two minutes of silence and then passed a condolence resolution mourning the demise of Manohar Parrikar on Monday. It said <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShri Parrikar will be remembered for his simplicity and his abilities as an exceptional administrator. His contribution to the building of modern Goa and to the modernization of India’s Armed Forces as well as improvement to the lives of ex.-Servicemen will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Manohar Parrikar was mourned across the country. Many dignitaries including Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajvardhan Rathore padi tribute to the memory of the departed leader at an event in Jaipur. He said Parrikar ji’s contribution to the defence of the country will always be remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Four-time Chief Minister and former Defence Minister Parrikar had been suffering from pancreatic cancer since February 2018. Born on December 13, 1955 in Mapusa, Goa, Parrikar did his schooling at Loyola School, Margao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1978. Parrikar was a member of the RSS before joining active politics. Parrikar represented Panaji assembly seat in the state for more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
