U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and her husband reported more than $2 million in income on their 2018 federal tax return, with the vast majority stemming from her husband\u2019s work as a partner in a law firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harris and \nher husband, Douglas Emhoff, a partner at DLA Piper, reported taxable \nincome of $1.8 million, including $157,352 from her Senate salary. The \ncouple paid $697,611 in taxes this year with an effective rate of 38.4 \npercent. In 2017, before the Republican tax overhaul went into effect, \nthey paid an effective tax rate of 40 percent and paid about a \nhalf-million dollars in taxes on lower income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The couple \nreported more than $225,000 in state and local tax payments, but the tax\n overhaul capped the amount they could deduct from their federal taxes \nat $10,000. Emhoff did not qualify for a 20 percent deduction for \npass-through business owners included in the new law because the \ndeduction isn\u2019t granted to law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harris is widely viewed as a\n top-tier contender in a large and growing Democratic field, running \ncompetitively in surveys for third place behind the much better-known \nformer Vice President Joe Biden, who hasn\u2019t officially announced, and \nVermont Senator Bernie Sanders. She raised $12 million in the first \nquarter of 2019, second only to Sanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harris has focused her \nmessage around progressive economics and social justice for immigrants, \nAfrican Americans and the LGBT community. She has proposed cutting taxes\n for middle-income and low-income families by providing tax credits and \ndirect payments to those households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before being elected to the \nSenate in 2016, Harris served as the California attorney general and as \nthe San Francisco district attorney. She\u2019s scheduled to campaign in the \nimportant early state of South Carolina this week.Harris joins several \nother 2020 hopefuls, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Amy \nKlobuchar, in releasing more than a decade of tax returns. Democrats \nhave been using the release of their tax information to contrast with \nPresident Donald Trump, who in the 2016 campaign became the first \npresidential candidate in more than 40 years to refuse to release his \nreturns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senator Bernie Sanders, who released only one year of \nreturns when he ran for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has said \nhe\u2019ll make 10 years\u2019 worth of returns public by April 15, the tax filing\n deadline. Sanders\u2019 campaign manager Faiz Shakir said Saturday that the \nsenator\u2019s tax returns will be \u201cboring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
