Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday accused President Donald Trump of betraying the working people who put him in office and challenged him to deny federal contracts to General Motors until the company reopens shuttered plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe\n biggest lie was that he was going to stand up for working families and \ntake on the establishment,\u201d the Democratic presidential contender told a\n Pittsburgh rally in his first visit of 2019 to the critical \nbattleground state of Pennsylvania. \u201cThat was a monstrous lie.\u201dEarlier \nin Lordstown, Ohio, and again in Pittsburgh, Sanders pressed Trump to \nput action behind his words on GM plant closings. Trump has assailed the\n company for shutting its small-car factory in Lordstown, in a \npolitically important state, complaining about the company\u2019s leadership \nand a local union leader while seldom mentioning the other US factories \nthat GM plans to close. That\u2019s not enough, Sanders said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His \nmessage to GM and other multinationals: \u201cIf you want a federal contract \npaid for by taxpayers, treat your workers with respect and dignity. No \nmore paying your workers inadequate wages while you provide CEO\u2019s with \nmultimillion-dollar parachutes, no more taking away health care \nbenefits, no more denying workers the right to form a union. \u201cAnd if you\n are not a good and responsible corporate citizen, do not think that you\n will get federal contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several union organizers spoke \nbefore Sanders at the Pittsburgh rally, part of Sanders\u2019 four-day, \nfive-state swing through states that are part of the Democratic strategy\n to rebuild the \u201cblue wall\u201d in 2020. Sanders attracted an estimated \n4,500 on the warm, breezy late afternoon to a grassy plaza near the \ncampuses of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some\n of Sanders\u2019 supporters from 2016 are still with him, and some are new. \nStephanie Hosbach, a day-care worker who voted for Clinton in 2016\u2019s \nprimary, drove an hour to see Sanders on Sunday and said her mind is \nmade up to vote for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI work two jobs,\u201d Hosbach, 34, said. \u201cI\n feel like the minimum wage needs to be higher. We all struggle and you \nknow Bernie\u2019s for those type of people.\u201dTrump\u2019s victory in Pennsylvania \nmade him the first Republican to win it since 1988. Trump also knows the\n Midwest is vital to his re-election bid and is looking to repeat in \nstates he won in 2016 and expand his territory.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
