Condemning\n as totally barbaric and inhuman the recent beheading of two Punjabis by\n the Saudis, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday \nsaid he would seek a detailed report from India\u2019s Ministry of External \nAffairs (MEA) on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing shock and grief over the \nvicious act, which has been confirmed by MEA to have taken place on \nFebruary 28, Captain Amarinder said it was atrocious that such incidents\n continued to happen in civilised nations in this day and age.The Chief \nMinister also flayed the MEA for failing to prevent, and then not \ndisclosing the execution of the two men, identified as Satwinder Kumar \nof Hoshiarpur and Harjeet Singh of Ludhiana, till it was forced to do so\n by a petition filed by Satwinder\u2019s wife in Hoshiarpur district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain\n Amarinder said he would approach Minister for External Affairs Sushma \nSwaraj to secure more details about the execution of the two men, \nallegedly in connection with a murder case. He would seek from the MEA \ninformation regarding the charges and would also question them on \nwhether due legal representation was provided to the two men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If \nthe executions were undertaken without prior information even to the \nIndian embassy in Saudi Arabia, with the victims not provided legal \ncounsel, it amounted to a grave violation of the international human \nrights, the Chief Minister said. He called upon the UN and other global \nhuman rights organisations to take serious cognizance of the incident \nand put pressure on Saudi Arabia to end its ancient and blatantly \nillegal practices, which were against all norms of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring\n to media reports that the families of the victims would not get their \nbodies due to restrictions in place in Saudi Arabia, the Chief Minister \nsaid he would seek Sushma\u2019s personal intervention to take up the matter \nwith the Saudi authorities at the highest level on this count. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\n the families should be deprived of the chance even to see their \ndeceased kin and perform the last rites makes the whole affair even more\n appalling and shocking, he added.Pointing out that just days before the\n reported beheadings, India had hosted the Saudi Crown Prince, whom \nPrime Minister Narendra Modi had received personally, in a break from \nprotocol, the Chief Minister said given the friendly relations between \nthe two leaders, getting the bodies of the two men back to India should \nnot be difficult for the MEA. If needed, the prime minister himself \nshould intervene to ensure the return of their mortal remains, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n Indian government should also take steps to ensure that such incidents \nare not repeated and no Indian is denied justice or his\/her legitimate \nright in any manner in the future, said the Chief Minister.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
