Lodged in Tihar Central Prison\u2019s newest complex at Mandoli, Kumar, 73, will be part of the jail\u2019s horticulture gang where convicts are required to do light work, including maintaining the green cover around the largely concrete compounds, plant and water saplings and tend to the available tree cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The work was assigned only recently, three months \nafter Sajjan Kumar surrendered following his conviction in a case \ninvolving five killings during anti-Sikh riots in Delhi Cantonment on \nNovember 1 and 2, 1984. The Delhi High Court on December 17 last awarded\n life term to Kumar in the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kumar subsequently surrendered\n and was jailed starting December 31, 2018. All his attempts to secure \nbail thereafter have failed, with the apex court agreeing to hear his \nbail application in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA convict\u2019s jail assignment has to \nbe appropriate to his age and health condition. Sajjan Kumar is 73 and \nhas a back condition. His assignment had to be based on medical advice. \nHe has been attached with the horticulture wing,\u201d a top jail source told\n The Tribune, adding that a range of work options, including carpentry, \nbakery, book-binding and file covering, were considered for Kumar before\n he was attached to horticulture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Horticulture is one of the \nday-to-day maintenance tasks prisoners handle on their own; others being\n painting, cooking, cleaning and light masonry. Back in Mandoli jail \ncomplex, located far away from Tihar prisons complex, Kumar is lodged in\n ward number 3 with 25 other convicts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tihar authorities \nconfirmed that Kumar was assigned work after three months of assessing \nwhat would suit his profile.Asked what Kumar\u2019s day in jail looked like, \nTihar authorities said he wakes up at 6 am when the wards are opened; \nhas tea like other convicts and then does his yoga.\u201cSajjan Kumar is \ntrained in yoga and does regular yoga sessions in jail,\u201d a Delhi prisons\n official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kumar\u2019s usual breakfast is khichdi and vegetable \nsandwiches sometimes. No eggs are allowed. \u201cEggs are only allowed on \nmedical advice for lactating mothers and prisoners who are patients of \nTB, Hepatitis C and HIV,\u201d a jail source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main punishment\n for Sajjan Kumar and other convicts is jail lock-up, which happens \ntwice daily. \u201cLock-ups entail deprivation of liberty and are the \nprincipal part of a convict\u2019s punishment; the part where a convict has \nto stay indoors,\u201d said an official.
