NASA astronaut Christina Koch is going to have her mission on the International Space Station extended to nearly 11 months, which would set a record for the longest spaceflight by a woman, the US space agency said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two other astronauts will return to Earth on\n October 3 but Koch\u2019s stay would be extended until February 2020, which \nwould beat the record held by another female US astronaut, Peggy \nWhitson, who spent 288 days aboard the ISS in 2016-17, NASA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\n feels awesome,\u201d Koch said when told her mission was being prolonged. \u201cI\n have known that this was a possibility for a long time and it\u2019s truly a\n dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jennifer Fogarty, chief scientist of NASA\u2019s \nHuman Research Program, said Koch\u2019s extended mission would provide \nadditional data about the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the \nhuman body and \u201csupport future missions to the Moon and Mars.\u201dThe record\n for an extended spaceflight by an American is held by US astronaut \nScott Kelly, who spent 340 days aboard the ISS in 2015-16 with Russian \nMikhail Kornienko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The longest ever spaceflight was by Russia\u2019s \nValery Polyakov, who spent 14 months aboard the Mir space station in \n1994-95.The current team aboard the ISS is made up of three Americans \nKoch, Anne McClain and Nick Hague two Russians Oleg Kononenko and Alexey\n Ovchinin and a Canadian, David Saint-Jacques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between June and \nSeptember, several astronauts will return to Earth and be replaced by \nothers, including an Italian, Luca Parmitano, and the first ever \nastronaut from the United Arab Emirates, Hazzaa Ali Almansoori, who will\n spend about a week in space.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
