Mali’s Prime Minister and cabinet resigned Thursday following a motion of no confidence in the government over its handling of violence in the centre of the country, according to the presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A statement from \nPresident Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s office said he had accepted Soumeylou\n Boubeye Maiga’s resignation, along with that of his ministers, after \nmass protests last month over the rising tide of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The \nstatement said a successor would be named soon, once consultations with \nruling and opposition parties had taken place. The government had come \nunder mounting pressure over its handling of violence in the restive \nMopti region and especially a massacre on March 23 in which 160 people \nwere killed in the village of Ogossagou near the border with Burkina \nFaso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members of the Dogon ethnic group, a hunting and farming \ncommunity with a long history of tension with the nomadic Fulani people \nover access to land, were accused of being behind the mass killing. Tens\n of thousands of people took to the streets of Bamako on April 5 to \nprotest the upsurge of violence, accusing the government of not doing \nenough to stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The protest was called by Muslim religious \nleaders, organisations representing the Fulani herding community, \nopposition parties and civil society groups. Mali has been struggling to\n restore stability since Islamist extremists linked to Al-Qaeda took \ncontrol of the country’s vast desert north in early 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While \nthe jihadists were largely driven out in a French-led military operation\n that began in January 2013, huge areas are still in the grip of \nlawlessness, despite a 2015 peace agreement with some armed groups that \nsought to definitively stamp out the Islamist threat. Since then, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
