Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who became the face of the tense military confrontation between India and Pakistan, has been shifted out of Srinagar and posted to a frontline air base in the western sector, official sources said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also learnt that the IAF\n was going to recommend Varthaman\u2019s name for Vir Chakra, the coveted \nwartime gallantry medal, which is the third highest after the Paramvir \nChakra and the Mahavir Chakra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Varthaman, who was captured by \nPakistan on February 27 during an aerial combat with Indian Air Force, \nhad returned to his squadron in Srinagar last month though he was on a \nfour-week sick leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sources said a medical board will review \nhis fitness to help the IAF top brass decide whether he can return to \nfighter cockpit as desired by him.Varthaman was captured by the \nPakistani Army on February 27 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot down \nin a dogfight with Pakistani jets during aerial combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before \nhis jet was hit, he downed an F-16 fighter of Pakistan. Varthaman was \nreleased on the night of March 1 by Pakistan.Orders have been issued for\n his transfer from Srinagar to another base in the western sector, \nsources said, terming the transfer as \u201croutine one\u201d.The IAF pilot went \non leave in mid-March after security agencies completed a nearly \ntwo-week debriefing following his return from Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After he \nwas captured, Varthaman showed courage and grace in handling the most \ndifficult circumstances for which he was praised by politicians, \nstrategic affairs experts, ex-servicemen, celebrities and people in \ngeneral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
