California Sen Kamala Harris has described her experience as a student at a historically black college as \u201cone of the most important aspects\u201d of her life. Now, her Democratic presidential campaign is using that experience to connect with voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only is she one of only \ntwo black candidates in a field that\u2019s expected to grow to more than 20 \ncandidates, she\u2019s also the only candidate who attended a historically \nblack college or university, commonly called an HBCU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And she\u2019s \nthe first major-party candidate to have graduated from an HBCU \nWashington\u2019s Howard University since Jesse Jackson ran for president in \nthe 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Harris\u2019s campaign has visited more historically \nblack colleges than any candidate, and she is burnishing her personal \nties to this community, and not just to current students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPresidential\n candidates are recognising HBCUs as a political and cultural center for\n the broader black community,\u201d said Aimee Allison, the founder of the \npolitical network She The People, which plans a candidate forum \nWednesday at Texas Southern University, a historically black college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harris\u2019s\n focus on historically black colleges could be particularly important in\n South Carolina, home to eight HBCUs. Black voters are vital to success \nfor Democratic primary candidates anxious to win the South\u2019s first \nprimary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Orangeburg, Harris\u2019s town hall Saturday night was \nmoderated by Bakari Sellers, a former South Carolina state \nrepresentative who recently endorsed her campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turning to a \ngroup of South Carolina State students seated on bleachers, Harris \ntalked briefly about the value of attending a historically black \ninstitution. \u201cAt an HBCU, everything you are told is that you can be \nwhatever you want to be, and there will be no barriers to that success,\u201d\n she said.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
