At least eight people were killed when a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Philippines\u2019 main island of Luzon on Monday and officials feared dozens could be trapped in the rubble of a collapsed commercial building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province of Pampanga was worst hit. Eight people \nwere killed and about 20 injured, provincial governor Lilia Pineda said \nby telephone, citing information from disaster officials.Rescuers were \nusing heavy duty equipment and search dogs to try to reach people \ntrapped after a four-storey building went down, crushing the \nground-floor supermarket, she said. \u201cThey can be heard crying in pain,\u201d \nshe said of those trapped. \u201cIt won\u2019t be easy to rescue them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\n quake was initially reported as being of 6.3 magnitude and later \nrevised down to 6.1 magnitude, the US Geological Survey and Philippines \nseismology authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Philippines is prone to natural \ndisasters, located on the seismically active Pacific \u201cRing of Fire\u201d, a \nhorse-shoe shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines that circles the \nedges of the Pacific Ocean. It is also hit by an average 20 typhoons a \nyear, bringing heavy rains that trigger deadly landslides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pampanga\u2019s\n international airport at Clark, a former US military base, was closed \nand scores of flights were cancelled after damage to parts of the \nfacility including check-in areas.Rescue teams in Manila were preparing \nto reinforce efforts to reach people trapped in Pampanga. The government\n urged people to be calm as rumours of greater death and destruction \ngained traction online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe urge them to refrain from spreading \ndisinformation in social media that may cause undue alarm, panic and \nstress,\u201d said presidential spokesman, Salvador Panelo.
