As many as 70 chairmen of local Conservative associations signed a motion calling for an emergency session of the party\u2019s grassroots forum to express no confidence in Prime Minister Theresa May, bringing the Brexit debate back to Westminster after the Easter break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As some \nparties prepared to announce candidates for the European elections, May \nmet her cabinet on Tuesday morning, while pro and anti-Brexit activists \nreturned outside parliament, noisily putting their cases forward before \npassersby and television cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under Conservative party rules,\n May is immune from a leadership challenge until December, having won \nthe last no-confidence vote in December 2018. But critics believe a \nno-confidence motion by the grassroots forum would add pressure on her \nto quit, instead of being pushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new Brexit date has been \npushed down the road to October 31, but the immediate challenge before \nMay is to reach a situation in which the UK avoids taking part in the \nMay 23 elections to the European Parliament. This is possible if a \nconsensus is reached to resolve the logjam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo be honest, I \nwould be delighted if she announced today she was announcing her \nresignation and we could then have an orderly election to choose a new \nleader of the Conservative party.\u201d \u201cI believe the only way we\u2019re going \nto break this impasse properly is if we have fresh leadership of the \nConservative party If there was an announcement today by the prime \nminister then of course we could start the process straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
